Aboriginal Law and Indigenous Law
Our lawyers recognize the distinction between “Aboriginal law” and “Indigenous law.” Aboriginal law generally refers to the body of law concerning a variety of issues related to Indigenous peoples in Canada, including constitutionally protected Aboriginal rights, interests, and treaty rights. Indigenous people also maintain their own inherent Indigenous laws. Indigenous law and Indigenous legal traditions are the laws and legal traditions of the First Peoples of this land, which are intimately connected to the land, customs, practices, and identity of each Indigenous Nation.
First Nations Law
Our team of lawyers provides legal advice and services to First Nation governments, entities, organizations and individuals on a variety of issues (“First Nation law”), including economic and business development, governance and policy development, land and natural resource management, regulation and administrative matters, wills and estate administration, employment law, and more.
We understand the complex legal and regulatory frameworks that affect Indigenous peoples and governments, as well as the unique issues that can arise when applying First Nation law, Indigenous law, or Aboriginal law. Our clients can count on us to provide a comprehensive assessment of their legal issues and sound strategy during negotiations or in court if that becomes necessary.
